The quick distinction
Most first-game confusion comes from applying one role’s rule to the other. House and Dark Arts have different action choices, Replenish steps and encounters. Check the acting role before you resolve a turn.
Movement and encounters
Can I split a 3 + 3 card into two spaces and four spaces?
No. You may use up to three movement for each of two different pawns, or combine the values for one pawn. It is not a pool that can be divided however you like. See the worked movement check. [pp.16, 20]
Is stunning the same as bumping?
No. A House pawn ending with a Dark Arts pawn triggers stunning; a Dark Arts pawn ending with a House pawn triggers bumping. Identify who moved into whom, then follow that procedure. See the encounter decision. [pp.16, 20]
Does passing across a bonus space trigger it?
No. A House pawn must finish its movement on the space. Passing over it is insufficient. The symbol identifies the available benefit. [pp.10–11]
Cards and recovery
Why does an Advanced card sometimes cost one card and sometimes two?
They are different acquisition routes. Taking an Advanced-row card with Learn costs two discards. Choosing it through the Card Acquire bonus costs one. Use the House turn acquisition table. [pp.10–11, 17]
Does a newly acquired card go into my hand?
The Learn action places your acquired card face down on top of your draw deck. It does not put it straight into your hand. The Dark Arts bump reward also top-decks the selected card. [pp.17, 20]
Does every card draw advance the Dark Arts path?
No. House Replenish advances it; an ordinary draw from another permitted effect is different. Dark Arts Replenish itself does not advance the path. Check the separate House and Dark Arts sequences. [pp.12, 17, 21–22]
Can Dark Arts discard unwanted cards during Replenish?
No. Stand up the stunned pawns, then draw to five. Do not borrow the House player’s discard option. [p.21]
Objectives and final turns
Can the houses combine their Shields to win as a team?
No. A House player wins by collecting their own second Shield. Coordinating against the Dark Arts does not turn that into a shared total. [pp.5, 23]
Does the game end immediately when the Dark Arts marker reaches the last space?
No. The final-stage procedure applies, and players continue trying to meet a victory condition. Replenish becomes unavailable, but the rules preserve other draw exceptions. Use the endgame checklist. [pp.22–23]

When an answer depends on a card
Check the card’s operative text, trigger and any mandatory or optional condition. A specific card instruction can override a general rule. If the interaction is still uncertain, use the complete publisher rules rather than treating a short FAQ as the last word. [p.16]
