Each tip below starts from a published rule and explains why it matters for your decisions. They are editorial heuristics, not measured win rates. When a card says something different, follow the card. [pp.10–23]
The race in one sentence
Houses race to earn Defence Shields. Each Shield needs a Book, a Scroll and the access item it shows. Dark Arts races along its path to collect Progress Tokens, and then needs the right pawns on its destination. Every turn, each side should either move its own race forward or slow the other one down. [pp.5, 11, 22–23]
| Side | What you are building | What slows you down |
|---|---|---|
| Houses | Book + Scroll + matching access item → Shield | Bumps that send pawns to the Great Hall; spending actions on Replenish |
| Dark Arts | Path progress + Progress Tokens + pawns on the destination | Stuns; House pawns in the way; few deployment spaces |
House opening: the first three turns
- Read your three Location cards before you move. A Scroll needs two of your pawns standing in two of those areas at the same time. Pick the pair that is closest together, then move two pawns toward them. You start with three pawns in the Great Hall, so use them as a team. [pp.6, 12, 17]
- Get a Book early. You can hold only one Book. Its effect resolves right away, so an early Book also helps you on the turns that follow. Plan a route through the Library, but do not take a long detour just to get there. [p.11]
- Pick your target Shield on turn one. Look at whether the visible Shields need a Dark Detector or a D.A. Coin. That tells you whether to push up the Loyalty track or plan to use the Room of Requirement. [pp.5, 18–19]
House mid-game: deck, tempo and Loyalty
Learn with a purpose
A new card goes on top of your draw deck, so it reaches your hand the next time you draw. Take cards that fill a gap you have right now: more movement, help with obstacles, or a way to use a Fly Off Point or Secret Passageway. A card that only looks strong is less useful. [pp.10, 17]
When to pay for the Advanced row
An Advanced card from Learn costs two discards. It also moves you one step up the Loyalty track. Pay that price when you need the Dark Detector. Reaching space five or beyond as the sole leader awards it. If your Shield needs a D.A. Coin instead, the normal row is often enough. Also check for a Card Acquire bonus space: its Advanced option costs only one discard. [pp.10–11, 17–18]
Treat Replenish as a group decision
Each House Replenish can move the Dark Arts marker forward. Talk with the other Houses so you do not all Replenish one after another. That speeds up the path, sometimes onto an Event Space. Before you Replenish, check what is on the next path space. A good habit is to Replenish only once your hand is nearly empty or you have stunned pawns that are blocking your plan. [pp.17, 22]
Use free actions every turn
Before your main action, ask two questions. Do you hold a Hogwarts Token from an earlier turn that would let you take another Explore? Are you already standing in two Location areas for a Scroll? Skipping either one wastes free progress. [pp.11, 17]
Defending against the Dark Arts
- A stun is your best defence. If a House pawn ends its move on a Dark Arts pawn, both are stunned. You then move the Dark Arts pawn to an adjacent space, and you choose where. Push it away from its destination or deployment spaces. [p.16]
- Watch the House Markers. Each bump gives Dark Arts one House Marker. A full set moves the path forward. If your House is the last one it needs, keep your exposed pawns out of reach for now. [p.20]
- Use Protected Areas. Dark Arts cannot enter or pass through them. A pawn waiting there for its next move is safe from bumps. [p.20]
- Block the destination early. Dark Arts wins only when its pawns are on its destination. Stunning pawns near that spot, or standing between them and it, buys time. [pp.22–23]
Dark Arts: how to apply pressure
Use bumps as tempo
A bump sends a House pawn back to the Great Hall. That undoes several turns of their movement. It also gives you a look at two Acquire cards, and you choose one for the top of your deck. You only get this reward once per turn. Spread your bumps over different turns instead of making two in one turn. [p.20]
Collect Markers in a smart order
Bump the Houses whose Markers you do not yet have. Bumping the same House twice adds nothing toward the set that moves your path. [p.20]
Keep reserves ready
Deploying a reserve pawn costs one movement point, and the deployment space must not already hold a Dark Arts pawn. Moving pawns off deployment spaces keeps them open. Remember that a stunned pawn still blocks its space. [p.20]
Know your colour unlocks
Orange and red effects unlock once the marker reaches their zone, and stay unlocked. Keep strong orange or red cards in mind as the path nears a new zone. Before that, you can still use their movement. [pp.21, 28]
Replenish on your terms
Dark Arts Replenish does not move the path, and it does not let you discard. Use it when stunned pawns are holding you back, not just to refresh your hand. [pp.21–22]
Endgame checklist
- Houses: count the Shields you still need, and the Book, Scroll and access item for each. Give the scarce items, like the Dark Detector, to the player who is closest to a Shield. [pp.18–19, 23]
- Dark Arts: a full set of Progress Tokens is not enough on its own. Plan to have the right number of pawns on your destination at the same time. Start moving them before you take the last token. [pp.22–23]
- Everyone: reread the final-stage rules before the marker enters the red zone. [pp.22–23]
Tips by player count
| Players | What changes | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | One House against four Dark Arts pawns, no reserve | The House player has to manage tempo alone. Replenish rarely and stun often. |
| 3 | Two Houses, one reserve pawn | The Houses should split up: one builds Shields, the other guards the destination. |
| 4–5 | More Houses, two or three reserve pawns | Dark Arts needs more Markers for a full set. The Houses should coordinate Replenish timing. |
Supply counts come from the setup table. The tips are editorial suggestions. [p.6]
Mistakes that throw games
- Moving toward a Shield without the item it needs.
- Several Houses Replenishing in a row and pushing the path forward.
- Dark Arts making two bumps in one turn and expecting two Acquire rewards.
- Leaving a Hogwarts Token or a ready Scroll unclaimed.
- Forgetting that Dark Arts needs pawns on its destination, not just tokens.
