LEARN THE RULES

Loyalty, Books, Scrolls and access items

Understand the items and thresholds that connect your actions to the victory checklist.

QUICK ANSWER

A Defence Shield requires a Library Book, a Parchment Scroll and the specific access item shown on that Shield: either the Dark Detector or a D.A. Coin. Use the Loyalty system to work toward access, and check each item’s holding limit and timing.

How the rewards fit together

A Defence Shield requires a Library Book, a Parchment Scroll and the specific access item shown on that Shield: either the Dark Detector or a D.A. Coin. Use the Loyalty system to work toward access, and check each item’s holding limit and timing. [pp.11–12, 18–19]

Find the three ingredients

Library Book

Visit the Library when you do not already hold a Book. Choose one of the two face-up Books, resolve its effect immediately, including resulting effects, and refill the display. You can hold one Book at a time. [p.11]

Parchment Scroll

Keep pawns in two of your three Location-card areas at the same time. Reveal those matches and return the two Location cards beneath their deck to claim a Scroll. After your first Scroll, take two replacement Location cards. After your second, return the remaining Location card and stop receiving further ones. [pp.12, 17]

Dark Detector or D.A. Coin

Use the actual symbol on the Shield; these items are not freely interchangeable. Both routes depend on the Loyalty track. The next section explains how. [pp.18–19]

Loyalty and the Dark Detector

You can advance through relevant marked destinations, applicable card effects, or the Advanced-card acquisition route. Reaching space five or beyond and becoming the sole leader awards the Dark Detector. Matching another player’s ordinary position does not itself make you the leader. [p.18]

The final Loyalty space has a special rule: an arriving player receives the Detector from the occupant, who moves back one space and draws a card. Spending the Detector on a Shield moves your tracker back three spaces. Return the Detector or pass it directly to an eligible player already at space five or beyond, following the track’s priority rules. [pp.18–19]

Room of Requirement and D.A. Coins

The room opens when a House tracker first reaches or passes space five. Entering the accessible room provides a D.A. Coin; a player can hold only one. If every House tracker falls below five, remove the room piece. A pawn inside remains there until the room opens again; do not invent an immediate exit. [p.19]

Avoid these reward mistakes

  • Visiting two Location-card areas at different times is not enough: the required pawns must occupy both at once.
  • You cannot hold a second Library Book or a second D.A. Coin.
  • The Detector and a D.A. Coin are not freely interchangeable when a Shield shows a specific symbol.
  • If the Room of Requirement closes, a pawn inside does not receive an invented immediate exit. [pp.11–12, 17–19]
